Ways to Teach English at Home

Teaching kids can be challenging since they often learn in unconventional ways. Many children for example, are unable to sit and learn grammatical rules or spelling from textbooks and dictionaries. This is not likely to engage children and even if they do learn a few things, the knowledge is not likely to be retained. Therefore, it is ideal to teach them in an interactive, unique, and fun way.

Here are some tips on how you can teach English at home:

Set a routine

One of the ways to improve English is to practice every day, so you will need to set a routine for your child. You can schedule a particular time and day each week, but you need to stick to it. These short sessions of about twenty to thirty minutes are enough for very young children since they have a short attention span.

Also, it is more beneficial to stick to short, regular sessions than long but irregular ones. Make sure that each session is fun and engaging for your child.

Play games

Kids learn more when they have fun, and games will motivate and engage them more to learn English. For example, you can use flashcards and play games like scrabble or Pictionary, or you can do crossword puzzles. These games will build their vocabulary and help them practice their grammar.

Role-play

You can also role-play your child’s favourite cartoon show, and you can let them perform the part of a character. Make a story about that character and let them act it out. You can also let them speak out dialogues which will help them practice their spoken English.

Show picture books

We all know that children love brightly coloured picture books and you can use these materials to teach them the alphabet, or names of animals etc. Begin by pointing at the picture and ask them what it is, then let them name it on their own.

Songs and rhymes

Several videos on YouTube are extremely helpful, especially when teaching kids English. These videos demonstrate the meaning of the song or rhyme. Your kids can also follow along with the song and they can easily understand the meaning as it is accompanied by actions and animated characters.

Using everyday situations

Describe routine activities and everyday situations to your child because this makes learning English much easier. This also helps kids become fluent speakers as they gain more exposure to conversations about different topics. So, it would be best if you always encouraged your child to explain or describe things in their surroundings.

Lastly, every child learns at a different pace, so don’t worry if your child is taking some time to learn the intricacies of the language. Be patient and do not rush.
